A Dispatch from Pop-Up Flea London

Owen & Fred made the trip across the pond in November to exhibit at Pop-Up Flea, the creation of Michael Williams and Randy Goldberg. This New York-born and bred show is a short-term shop for long term goods, with brands ranging from Tellason to Steven Alan and Shinola to Owen & Fred.

London has a special interest for us, because we feel our products do well and an are understood by the UK audience. Indeed, we’ve only barely dipped our toe into that pond, with a handful of stockists, but a good number of customers of our direct to customer website. We see lots of opportunities in 2015 for broader distribution into the UK, and not just London but centers such as Oxford, Manchester and Liverpool.

Back to show: This was our second Pop-Up Flea, and the show’s second in London. Located in the heart of Shoreditch, the site at the Old Truman Brewery got good foot traffic. Shoreditch is a bit like Williamsburg on steroids. It was an window into what Billyburg might look like five years on. Lots of pop up stores, a fair share of large brands with footprints, and seemingly a men’s store on every block. Indeed, we saw a large lineup at 10:00am in the cold London rain for a men’s sample sale.

Our fellow exhibitors were a great bunch including Matt and Scott from Steven Alan, Chris and Kirk from Billykirk, Paul from Tellason and some new friends, too: Chris and his wife, founders of LOFT, a Belfast-based brand of men’s ties and scarves.

We continued our tradition of mailing out post cards for anyone, anywhere in the world, which was a great hit with attendees. We collected a great stack of cards with addresses as far afield as California, the Phillippines and Australia. And of course, we got plenty of laughs for our tongue-in-cheek signage.

We relish the chance to get to London, weather dreary or sunny and hope to get back there soon. For those of you stateside, the next Pop-Up Flea takes place in mid-December in New York. See you then.
